Class Look-Up Delivers the Ability to View Multistate Scopes® Information

Posted Date: September 12, 2025

Page Content

The Class Look-Up tool just got an exciting new upgrade! With the new Scopes State Applicability feature, users can instantly see all of the states a Scopes Description applies to, making searches faster, smarter, and more precise.

Key Benefits

  • View multiple states in one Scopes Description
  • Identify state-specific Scopes Descriptions at a glance
  • Compare state scopes information in side-by-side windows fast and efficiently
  • Avoid excess searches across multiple states

How It Works

  • Enter a class code in the “Search By” field
  • Click a Scopes Description from the results to open a new modal window
  • Scroll down to the Scopes State Applicability section to view the list of applicable states

Example 1

Scenario: You need to classify an automobile parts store that does repair work. The business operates in Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska.

Search Steps:

  1. Under Select State(s), select Colorado.
  2. Under Search By, select Phraseology and Scopes and enter: %auto%parts%sales%repair.
  3.
  4. Review the search results.
  5. Select the Scopes Description for Code 8380.
  6.
  7. Review the description to determine that this is the code you will use to classify this business.
  8.
  9. Scroll to the Scopes State Applicability section to determine if this Scopes Description also applies to the remaining states, Kansas and Nebraska.
  10.

Result: The Scopes State Applicability list confirms that Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska all use the same Scopes Description—no need to open the Kansas or Nebraska results as they all match.

Example 2

Scenario: The business provides pressure cleaning services for building exteriors. Workers frequently use ladders to reach elevated areas. The business operates in Montana and Oregon.

  1. Search for Code 5551 for Montana and Oregon.
  2. Click Open links in new tab/window to view multiple states simultaneously.
  3. Select the Scopes Description for Montana and review the Scopes State Applicability for the state. You see that Oregon is not included in the list.
  4. Select the Scopes Description for Oregon.
  5. Position the screens side by side to compare the Scopes Descriptions.
  6.
  7. Scroll to the Scopes State Applicability section.
  8.

Results: The Scopes State Applicability section reveals that Oregon is not included in the same applicability list as Montana and has a state exception. This helps clarify classification decisions and ensures accurate code selection for each state.
