Introduction

Row 1

Interactivity

This interactive dashboard provides an overview of the average cost of a lost-time workers compensation claim, broken out by three main injury descriptions:

  • Cause of Injury (COI)
  • Nature of Injury (NOI)
  • Part of Body (POB)

Helpful tips for using this resource:

  1. The tabs allow a user to select a category of interest within each respective grouping. For the selected category, the visuals display reported lost-time claim severities, percent shares of category loss dollars relative to total loss dollars, and percent shares of category claim counts relative to total claim counts, over time.
  2. The Additional Injury Characteristics section within these tabs displays information on cross-dimensional relationships between each of the Cause of Injury (COI), Nature of Injury (NOI), and Part of Body (POB) categories.
  3. The Injury Severity Rankings tab allows for direct comparison of the lost-time claim severities across all injury categories for the latest policy year (Policy Year 2022).
  4. Information is included for Policy Years 2013 through 2022 as of a 1st report***.

Underlying data values as well as information up through a 10th report (as available) can be downloaded here.

Note: Values are as reported and have not been developed, on-leveled, trended, or adjusted for inflation. While patterns across various maturities were reviewed, takeaways were generally similar and thus the visuals and insights in this dashboard focus on a 1st report.

Cause of Injury (COI)

Column 1

Key Insights

  • Motor Vehicle severity, which has been trending upwards, remained stable in 2022. These accidents are more likely to result in a large loss.1 Approximately 40% of losses and 30% of claims within Motor Vehicle are coded to POB Multiple Body Parts.

  • Fall/Slip accidents account for over a quarter of the claim count and nearly one-third of the loss share. These types of claims make up a significant share within the Construction industry and are more likely to become a fast-emerging large claim.2

  • While severity for Strain claims is up in the latest year, the share of claims and losses for Strain injuries continues to trend downward.

Nature of Injury (NOI)

Row 1

Key Insights

  • Amputation represents the highest severity of all NOIs, but accounts for less than 3% of the loss share. 90% of Amputation claims are for POB Hand/Fingers/Wrist.

  • The share of claim counts and losses for Contusion/Concussion has increased over the 10-year period. This injury results most often due to a Fall/Slip claim.

  • Severity has been trending upwards for Fracture/Crush/Dislocation, which accounts for about 16% of claim counts and 24% of losses. These claims are commonly associated with COI Fall/Slip claims.

  • Sprain/Strain make up a significant share of claim counts. Despite having a lower average severity, these types of claims have a higher propensity to become a slow-emerging large claim.2

Additional Injury Characteristics

Part of Body (POB)

Row 1

Key Insights

  • Arm/Shoulders account for the largest share of claim counts and losses, with shares that have remained consistent since 2013. The top cause of these claims is Strain.

  • Head/Central Nervous System claims have the highest severity of all POBs, but only account for 6% of the loss share. The majority of these claims are caused by Falls/Slips and being Struck By something. While severity for these claims is high, it has not increased over time.

  • Lower Back shares of claim counts and losses have been decreasing. Lower Back injuries are often caused by Strains, which is why a similar pattern of decline can be observed between the two characteristics.

  • The second highest POB severity corresponds to Multiple Body Parts claims. While the share of claim counts for this POB has decreased slightly since 2013, the share of loss has remained consistent due to a steady increase in severity. This POB is highly correlated with NOI Other Trauma and these types of claims have a higher propensity of becoming a fast-emerging large claim.2
